I assumed this was going to be the closer. Then on to side 2, with the psychedelic Bowie-esque "Saucers", the nod to Elton's blues roots that is "Stinker" (not a favourite of mine, yet I enjoy it enough in the context of the album), and the aforementioned single, for which I gained a new appreciation on hearing it after this batch of songs. We get a fast rocker a melodic ballad another rocker a jaunty song with the vibes of America's Deep South a music hall nonsense song and a frantic paced closer to the first side. Each song surprised me by sounding different to the one before. I was slightly stunned at that first listen. This sometimes happened on radio in those days. Then, out of the blue, the local commercial pop station announced the arrival of the new Elton John album - and PLAYED IT IN ITS ENTIRETY. I liked it but I did think it was fairly similar to some of his earlier slower songs such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. ![]() ![]() and then a new single appeared on the airwaves called Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me. I had heard the singles from GYBR, and I had that album. This album, when it was released, seem to come without much fanfare and kind of snuck up on me. After all the recent discussion of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I think it's time to give the follow-up album some love.
